Virtual Assistants (VAs), generally working from standalone offices, may be contracted to serve as administrative assistants – organizing meetings and handling correspondence. Some VAs, however, are contracted to design newsletters and brochures; maintain blogs, or research potential competitors and customers. VAs may also work on large-scale projects for their clients, including helping to draft Business Plans, governance manuals and employee orientation manuals. In fact, VAs may run projects on behalf of their clients, providing the necessary time and project management skills that clients may not have within their existing workforce. Clients may include entrepreneurs and small to medium-size businesses that need some back-office expertise; scholars requiring assistance with grant applications and research; or non-profit and not-for-profit organizations looking for effective sponsorship letters and fundraising opportunities. Contracting with a VA frees the small business owner to concentrate on growing his or her business and the larger business to limit its employee related expenses. In the current economic downturn, many companies may be looking to reduce these costs, although the workload may not appreciably diminish in tandem with the restructuring/downsizing. VAs can step in to fill the breach, relieving pressure on the business owner and improving staff morale by taking over some duties.
